Armacao de Pera is located approximately a 40 minutes drive to the west of Faro in the Central Algarve. It is one of the oldest established resorts in the Algarve and was originally a fishing village for the village of Pera. The name 'Armacao' is said to be linked to the tuna fishing industry that existed in the Algarve in the 15th century.
Today, Armacao acts as a popular holiday destination for many national and international visitors but it is particularly frequented by the Portuguese. It is a picturesque resort that offers visitors plenty of fresh seafood, a wealth of ancient culture and a modern development to the west of the town, which has been built to fit in with the rest of the resort. The surrounding areas have been protected against any further development, to protect this jewel in the crown of Southern Portugal.
The eastern part of town - the 'old town' - has retained all its original character, with a variety of brightly-painted fishing boats, narrow cobbled streets and plenty of high-quality fish restaurants. In the old town lies part of the remains of a small 18th century fort which was built to defend the town against pirates who began terrorising southern Spain and Portugal in the 16th century. Although largely a ruin, visitors can still see the tiny chapel and vestiges of the walls today.
The new pedestrianised promenade which runs along the seafront between the eastern and western parts of town, plays host to numerous bars and cafés that provide shade and refreshments by day and lively entertainment by night.
Despite the fact that Armacao is a traditional Portuguese resort, English is widely spoken throughout.
Armacao de Pera's beach has been awarded the coveted 'blue flag' for its quality of water, ease of access, parking, lifeguards and general facilities. The beach is said to be one of the longest in Portugal, stretching out as far as the eye can see. It shelves gently into the sea, making it safe for paddling children and weak swimmers. To the west of Armacao de Pera the landscape changes from long sandy beaches to the most beautiful coastline in the Algarve, featuring coves and grottos surrounded by stunning rock formations. The pretty beach of Senhora da Rocha has a tiny pilgrim chapel on the headland, where a popular religious festival takes place on 4 August each year.
The Algarve has stunning beaches, beautiful scenery and near-round sunshine, making it the ideal holiday destination.
